You can use small jewellery boxes, a jewellery armoire, a vintage suitcase, or a pretty container from a flea market. Here are some unique ways to store your collection.

VINTAGE SUITCASE

Have your grandmother’s vintage suitcase at the back of your closet? Upcycle it! Save your favourite pieces and store them inside the suitcase. It’s a great way to travel with your music jewellery. Decorate the suitcase using the artwork of your favourite band or your sketches. You can also use a vintage suitcase to organize your favourite bracelets, necklaces, and rings – just put them in a space and close the suitcase.

STORE YOUR PIECES BY COLOR AND STYLE

Jacobs suggests organizing your jewellery into categories first before storing them. You can break down your pieces by colour, or by the occasion, season, or purpose they were purchased for. For instance, you may want to separate your jewellery by the amount of money you spent on them, such as “less than Rs. 10,000/-”, “Rs. 15,000-Rs. 50,000/-,” and “Rs. 50,000/- and up.”

GET CREATIVE WITH STORAGE

If all else fails, you can always get creative. “I use picture frames, small corkboards, vintage suitcases, and crates,” says Grunfeld. “I have even used large recycled cereal boxes.” She suggests placing a photograph of your jewellery inside so you know exactly what’s inside.

ORGANIZE ACCORDING TO TYPE

Fuzzy pouches are the best way to store stud earrings. They are also great for rings, as they can be worn stacked or individually. Earring studs should be stored in a box or a pouch, as they tend to fall out of bags or hooks. Brooch pins can be organized with a pincushion. To keep bracelets, necklaces and chains organized, Lisa Jacobs recommends using a necklace hanger that can also hold multiple necklaces.

USE A MAGNETIC STRIP

A magnetic stripe is a great way to keep your earrings organized, especially if you have extra stud earrings in varying sizes. It’s also a good way to store individual bangles without having to sort through a large pile. You can get a magnetic strip cut to your preferred size at any hardware store.

PIN AND/OR BAR JEWELRY

The simplest way to organize your jewellery is to group pieces together and then hang them off a single hanger or bar. You can easily create a bar by stapling four pieces of wood together. Then screw in a picture-hanging hook and attach it to a closet rod or shoe rack. You can also create a decorative bar by covering the wood with fabric or even wrapping ribbon around it. Then simply attach your jewellery.

STORE BY CATEGORY

Using boxes also makes it easy to categorize your jewellery based on the event for which it’s worn. For example, Jacobs suggests grouping necklaces by type and storing them in a shoebox. Several pairs of earrings can be grouped together and then pinned to the side of the box. Then you can store most of your boxes (leaving out the ones you wear most often) in a closet or drawer. Many of these boxes have compartments designed specifically for different types of jewellery, especially earrings, which can be stored on their own, according to Martha Stewart.

SORT YOUR JEWELRY BY TYPE

Nancy Sarto, the founder of Arsenic and Lace, recommends sorting your jewellery into categories based on their type and then storing them in jewellery boxes that best fit that category. She recommends the following storage options:

Earrings: Store them in a magnetic case.

Rings: Store them in a ring box, where earrings can be safely kept next to them.

Necklaces: Store them in a necklace holder that sits on a shelf.

Bracelets and Watches: Store them in a bracelet rack or watch winder that stands on a tabletop.
